Catalyst Overview

Founded in 2003, Catalyst Biosciences, Inc. is a leading biotechnology company focused on developing proteases as a therapeutic platform for hemophilia, age-related macular degeneration, oncology and inflammation. Proteases are well established as a class of drugs, with over 7 protease drugs on the market and over $3.5 billion in annual sales. Catalyst is developing and intends to market both natural and engineered human proteases ("Alterase™ therapeutics") to treat major diseases. By engineering human proteases to alter their substrate specificity so that they can inactivate any given protein target, Catalyst will vastly increase the use and application for therapeutic proteases, and create a new paradigm in target intervention. Catalyst has assembled a team of world-class scientists and advisors, an enabling technology platform, and a robust pipeline, and is thus poised to become a fully integrated biopharmaceutical company with a diversified portfolio.

Summary of the Position

The Scientist will report to a Senior Scientist, in the Protein Sciences and Fermentation group.  As a member of this group, the incumbent will participate in the expression of pre-clinical candidate proteins for in-vitro and in-vivo screening leading to the selection of a candidate for clinical testing. This position will involve participating in production of candidate therapeutic proteins, the optimization of processes for small scale bioreactors, participating in growing and manipulating CHO host cells and recombinant CHO cell lines in a serum-free suspension culture. The work scope will also involve manipulating and preparing expression vector plasmids using molecular biology techniques including RT-PCR, and engineering CHO cell lines to overcome bottlenecks.
